My philosophy
Strength is a skill.
You can access more strength if you commit to not just, say, lifting weights, but learning proper form that helps you both build strength and, crucially, prevents injury. You can’t get stronger if you’re hurt, and any routine that endangers your body won’t help you get stronger.
I am very good at getting you excited about unlocking your potential skills (safely!), your potential strength, and your potential new you. Everyone can be stronger—and everyone feels and looks better when they are.
And don’t sweat it: If past programs have felt too aggressive, my job is to demystify the process, and break it down for you, like a dance instructor. This isn’t magic, but a good coach can guide you holistically, and without the usual drill-sergeant bluster you’ve likely experienced in the past.

Testimonials
“Tom gave an awesome Kettle bell instructional private class to myself and a fellow coach. He helped us by demonstrating the correct form, key words to use with our own clients, along with great progressions. He is a very intelligent individual who really knows his stuff. I highly recommend Tom to anyone that is looking to improve there kettle bell skills or looking for a personal trainer. You will not be disappointed! Great Coaching Tom!”
“Tom led a Kettlebell training session in my studio. His knowledge of the human body and the biomechanics of how the body moves, coupled with his super clear instructions has made all the difference in how we coach kettlebells! Tom’s expertise and coaching style are so darn beneficial to the field! My coaching and hence, business, will definitely benefit from what he has taught me. I can’t wait for him to come back again! He stands out as a GREAT Coach!”
“I trained with Tom during a week in New York (having only just started with kettlebells a few months before), and came away wishing I lived closer and could train with him more often!
The workouts were fantastic. His focus on getting the form right, his patience, and his interest in really teaching you how to master the moves... he is by far one of the best personal trainers I have ever had the pleasure of working out with and is definitely my go-to person in NYC from here on out.”
“Tom is a fantastic trainer - encouraging, timely, and patient. Most of all, he is adept at teaching form - something vital for effective workouts. He is simply one of the best - which is something to be said in a place like NYC, where everyone calls themselves a personal trainer. Tom is a far cry from your typical Equinox style training sessions which have become ubiquitous. I wish I could keep it under wraps, but Tom’s training is unique, versatile, and most importantly comes with proven results.”
“Tom is, in a word, extraordinary! He is knowledgable, motivating, positive, and simply a fantastic partner in fitness. He’s also super fun and simply a great person to spend an hour with! He is always focused on form and safety and pushes me hard - which is good - but not in a way that overwhelms me, which is essential. He is an incredible coach and teacher. I’m so amazed at the progress I’ve made with him, both in my strength and fitness and also my attitude about it. I recommend Tom 1000% - anyone who works with him is lucky!”
“Lafera is patient. He doesn’t expect his clients to be superheroes. He assesses everyone’s strengths and weaknesses individually and knows that if just standing on one foot is a challenge, helping you make progress is the key. I always come out of class feeling like I did what I could, and that the only yardstick I have to measure myself against is me. That’s so much better than the average, cookie-cutter class where the instructor seems to expect you can do the same thing as the 22-year-old college kid.”
“I’ve been working with Tom for close to 10 years and he is by far the most knowledgeable & effective trainer with whom I’ve worked. Tom is organized, focused and prepared for every session. Every session is both demanding and enjoyable. And I see results! I highly recommend Tom.”
“I recently attended Tom’s hardstyle kettlebell clinic. Tom did a great job of explaining how to perform the movements safely as well as the reasons why the exercises are important. He was able to find the flaws in my technique and give me straight forward methods to correct them.I left the clinic feeling confident that I would be able to implement what I learned to improve my training.”
“Thomas exceeded my expectations and blew me away! New to kettlebells and completely out of my element, Thomas made me feel comfortable and had me swinging like a pro by the end of our first session. He has a great way of breaking down complex movements and explaining just enough of the physiology to make you understand why you’re doing it, but not be overwhelmed by jargon. His enthusiastic personality makes you want to workout harder & be better. He’s inspiring, hilarious, and most importantly makes workouts fun. Anyone who has the opportunity to train with him, should do it. He’s amazing and will make you level up.”
“I met Tom after rehabbing a shoulder and foot almost 5 years ago, and have been working with him ever since. He takes the time to explain the “how and why” and understands how to challenge you at the right pace. His overall knowledge and experience with conditioning and weight training is exceptional (and the random facts he throws at you are somewhat astonishing)! He’s always on time, and is flexible with schedule and location (my building gym, or his). With my crazy travel and work schedule, Tom is the reason I’ve been able to stay engaged with fitness.”
“I have been been doing strength/resistance training with Thomas LaFera for almost 10 years; through surgeries and through joint replacements. Throughout this time, I’ve watched a lot of other trainers with their clients, and I truly think Tom is the best of the best.
Tom is very creative. If one way doesn’t work, due to my injuries or joint replacements, Tom will find another way to get me to do whatever It is I need to do. He’s got the patience of a saint. I don’t always like what he wants me to do, but I always know he’s having me do it because it is in my own best interest and I trust him implicitly, so I do my best.
Tom is very knowledgeable in human physiology and I’ve learned a lot from him. When I’ve had physical therapy (pt) he’s worked in conjunction with my therapist, and I’ve been able to stop my pt sessions earlier than planned.
Because of Tom’s excellent training, I am much stronger than most other women in my age group. I hope I am training with Tom for the next ten and beyond years. He makes me enjoy my training sessions, whereas with another trainer they might become tedious and boring and I would have quit.”
